Kroger Leads Fight to End Hunger in America

Every store participates to provide local food banks with enough food for 22.5 million meals in communities Kroger serves throughout the country

CINCINNATI, Ohio, March 5, 2007 – Working to end hunger in America, The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) and its family of stores throughout the country contributed more than 30 million pounds of food to local food banks last year, enough to provide 22.5 million meals to citizens in the communities it serves across the country.

“Combating hunger in America is one of Kroger’s core priorities,” said Lynn Marmer, Kroger’s Group Vice President for Corporate Affairs and a member of the Board of Directors of America’s Second Harvest, the largest charitable domestic hunger-relief organization in the country. “Kroger has a long tradition of giving back to the communities we serve. We appreciate the commitment our customers, associates and vendor partners share in drawing attention to the fight against hunger.”

Kroger has helped lead the fight against hunger in the United States for more than 25 years. In the past five years, the Company has donated more than 135 million pounds of food and groceries, valued at more than $200 million, to more than 85 local food banks serving communities where the Company’s customers and associates live and work.

In addition to food, Kroger’s contributions to local food banks include other products such as toiletries and cleaning supplies – items families and individuals relying on food banks request most often after food.

In 2006, Kroger was elected "Retailer of the Year" by America’s Second Harvest, the fourth time in six years the Company has received the award. Food banks across the country select recipients for this award on an annual basis.
