Using Natural Products When Cleaning

Vinegar, baking soda, salt and citrus

When it’s time for a deep clean, whether you’re clearing out the garage or scrubbing the bathroom, be cautious of the chemicals you could be breathing in or absorbing through your skin. Cleaners can be loaded with harsh ingredients that can be much more dangerous than the dirt and grime you are removing.

There are plenty of ways to go natural when cleaning. You can certainly find all-natural products on the supermarket shelf, but there are easy and inexpensive ways to make your own natural cleaning supplies at home.

You can achieve a fresh new start with 4 simple ingredients: vinegar, baking soda, salt and citrus.

  1. Distilled white vinegar is a well-known and versatile cleaner. Vinegar solutions are an easy and economical way to clean multiple areas of your home.
  2. Often found in refrigerator doors and smelly sock drawers, baking soda is essential for removing and absorbing odors. Like vinegar, baking soda is an affordable option with many uses.
  3. Salt is a natural abrasive cleaner. It can be used as a scrub or for removing pesky stains.
  4. Citrus is a perfect way to add natural scents to your home. Our favorites to use for cleaning include lemons, oranges and grapefruit. Lemons are natural antibacterial disinfectants and can be used to neutralize any vinegar smells.

Concocting your own cleaning supplies will largely depend on your personal preference and home needs, so try experimenting with different combinations. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • For cleaning floors, counters or windows, combine 1-2 parts vinegar to 1 part water. Use a spray bottle to apply to surface, then wipe the dirt away with a clean cloth.
  • Cleaning the bathroom and shower has never been easier. Cut open your favorite citrus fruit (we love grapefruits and lemons!) and sprinkle coarse salt on the pulp. Scrub shower tiles and faucets to help remove hard water stains. For toilet bowls, sprinkle baking soda in the bowl and lightly scrub any grime away with a brush or wand.
  • You’ll never have to purchase an artificial air freshener again with this simple spray recipe. Mix together 1 part rubbing alcohol with 6 parts water. Add your favorite essential oil scent like orange, lemongrass or eucalyptus. For a great subtle smell, 20 drops of the oil will suffice.
  • Wood furniture and floors can be cleaned by wiping the surface with a solution of equal parts lemon juice and olive oil. For an even easier option (and slightly more affordable), boil 2-4 Simple Truth Organic™ Black Tea bags in water and wipe down the wood for a beautiful shine.
